I now have titanium screws and rods in my lower back from bending over to work and or pick stuff up. Squat down if you have to reach the floor if you can. Thanks a bunch to all you guys for what you share with us viewers.

It is the 4.0, not sure if yours being a 4.6 would help anything but it's going to be hot. Hopefully your improved cooling system helps but I had to stop a few times this weekend to cool down in the heat of death valley this past weekend. • You Need to have a Fan shroud on the Radiator to Duct the air / be able to actually pull air through a Radiator at Low speed & idle. other wise its just a Fan spinning in the air. ducting the air / in a fan shroud utilizes 100% of the Radiator and gives Proper air flow through the radiator & condenser. Your Going to Need that in over 100 degree heat for sure.

    • They are very heavy, they have a very narrow power band, and The power is more difficult to modulate on loose surfaces than a gasoline engine. We do most all our recovery in the softest sand known on planet earth. Diesel powered vehicles do not do well in it.

  • Hi Lizzy, I had the same question about the fitment of the valve cover and just went back a few episodes to where the original engine was in the Banana. It looked the same, so I knew the new engine would fit. Two big electric fans with shrowd on the front of the radiator solves the cooling, the engine-driven fan coming forward into the radiator, the engine-driven fan hitting the hood, and trying to make a shrowd for the engine-driven fan. Yes, I know you are skeptical about electrical fans, but they work in high horsepower applications, not just Jeeps. Banks makes amazingly good parts, mostly for diesels, but for other stuff too. I would have thought that two limit straps, tied to the top shot mounts would have been lighter and simpler.

  • Dude, when you busted out that old ass grand Cherokee w/p powered mechanical fan idea… I can’t be the only xj guy of being like- that literally is worse than stock and isn’t gonna work. Love y’all’s fab videos, and we all make weird rabbit hole decisions. Can’t wait to see the banana going again. Idk why you went through so much trouble when it would’ve been easier to run a stock xj fan location and then a super electric aux fan.

    Evan LimaEvan LimaOy oldin
    • @Matt's Off Road Recovery I guess I’ll keep watching to see the final product. I’m not apposed to mechanical fans at all, just curious as to why you’d prefer the grand Cherokee w/p setup over the stock offset xj setup? Looking forward to the rest of the build. Thanks for the reply. You guys rock!

      Evan LimaEvan LimaOy oldin
    • I think you’re going to be shocked at the performance. I’ve already got this same system working in the morrvair, and it blows ice cold AC when it’s 117° outside, pulling a trailer through the dunes, with water temps in the 195° range. I don’t understand peoples aversions to mechanical clutch fan systems, but every single heavy duty Towing rig on the planet is running them. All my super duty trucks, all my Freightliner trucks…, If it has to pull heavy loads at higher RPMs and lower speeds, it will have a mechanical fan.

Matt's Off Road RecoveryMatt's Off Road RecoveryOy oldin
  • That Radiator and Fan combo may keep the Movair cool, but the 4.0 packed in the small space is another beast on its on. But with the larger rad and vents you should be fine. Interested to see how to overcome the higher fan / hood clearance. Some people have a hood scoop for their blower... You may have the very first FAN hood scoop!

    Lonesome XJLonesome XJOy oldin
    • I have very high hopes for this. I’ve done a lot of research online, and then done a massive amount of research myself. With this jeep, the three or four other jeeps I own, and the morrvair. I know how to keep an XJ cool everywhere except for pulling a trailer through the sand when it’s over 110° At about 102°, I have to turn the air conditioning off. At about 106°, I have to intermittently run the heater. Than morrvair has a far tighter engine bay than the Xj. No hood vents, in fact the trunk weatherstripping is even installed. (it used to be the trunk) Recently it was 117°, I had a tail wind, a trailer, and the AC blasting ice cold. 195° for the coolant temps, give or take a few degrees. With the hot water circulation duct plugged, and a few other secret tricks, I expect a similar results.

Matt's Off Road RecoveryMatt's Off Road RecoveryOy oldin
  • Also, I meant to ask, but it slipped my mind. I get not needing cruise control, I'm surprised you guys don't need the rear wiper, or does it not rain often enough there to where it would be necessary.

  • Why not use some electric high performance fans that fit on on that rad? I mean I did the same thing with my 92 Silverado, I put in a performance rad that wasn't even made that truck and mounted it in a way where I don't need the shroud anymore, and used an Electric fan that some of them drag cars use (love living buy Summit racing) as I haul with the truck all time and cooling I wanted to improve, I'm sure there is a reason, you want to stay with a clutch fan.

    Viking 2121Viking 21212 oy oldin
    • The system you described last a few minutes driving up the sand dunes pulling a trailer before the coolant was boiling out. The mechanical fan will move about twice as much air as the best pair of electric fans. The scenario that I’m building for is 5000 RPM engine speed, pulling a trailer through the sand dunes, below 10 mph, For 15 minutes uninterrupted.
